AlQa'dah 7, 1432, Oct 5, 2011, SPA - Russia and China both used their veto power to block a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the crackdown on anti-government protesters in Syria. Russia and China are two of the five permanent members of the council that have veto power. Four other countries abstained from the vote-Brazil, India, Lebanon and South Africa. The nine countries who supported the measure were permanent members Britain, France, and the United States, and non-permanent members Bosnia, Colombia, Gabon, Germany, Nigeria and Portugal.
