A senior police official says 33 people have been killed in the last 24 hours in the latest outbreak of violence in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, according to AP. Karachi police chief Saud Mirza said Thursday that authorities are investigating the cause of the fighting in the country's largest city. Karachi has a long history of political, ethnic and sectarian violence, and much of the fighting is blamed on gangs allegedly affiliated with the main political parties in the city. A former national lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan People's Party was gunned down on Wednesday evening. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has said there were at least 490 political, ethnic and sectarian killings in Karachi during the first half of the year.
