U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called on the nations of the world to commit even more to solving global problems together, saying that in an increasingly linked world, no nation can solve problems on its own. Ban Ki-moon delivered the remarks to the U.N. General Assembly after the 192-nation body elected him to a second term as secretary-general. Speaking about when he was first elected in 2007, Ban said: "We knew then-and more so now-that we live in an era of integration and interconnection, a new era where no country can solve all challenges on its own and where every country should be part of the solution." Working together must not be a mere exercise in diplomacy, the U.N. chief said, but must lead to tangible outcomes. "We need results that people can see and touch-results that change lives-make a difference," he said. Achieving results will mean greater efforts in identifying the linkages between problems, Ban said: "We must do more to connect the dots among the world's challenges, so that solutions to one global problem become solutions for all," The former South Korean foreign minister, who will lead the U.N. until December 31, 2016, thanked the assembly for re-electing him, saying, "You do me a very great honor, beyond expression."
