The United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously on Friday to create a new entity that will seek to improve the lives of girls and women worldwide. The establishment of the U.N. Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women is a result of years of negotiations between the 192 member states. "I am grateful to member states for having taken this major step forward for the world's women and girls," said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The new body becomes operational on January 1, 2011.
