Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems headed for a convincing victory Sunday and may gain power to rewrite the constitution, UPI reported. Polls predict the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, will take up to half the vote, with the second-place Republican People's Party, or CHP, far behind at 28 percent, Britain's The Guardian newspaper reports. If the AKP wins two-thirds of the Parliament, 367 out of 550 seats, Erdogan will be able to change the constitution without calling a referendum. He says he will consult with other parties even if not required to. All sides grant the constitution needs major revision. It is largely a 1982 document drafted by the army after the last coup in 1980. The AKP has won wide support for rescuing Turkey's economy after a crash in 2001, bringing inflation down from 138 percent to 7.2 percent while raising wages. Turkey now has a stronger economy than many EU members and the 17th largest in the world.
