At least nine policemen including a senior officer were killed and dismembered by suspected Maoist rebels in India's central state of Chhattisgarh, officials said Tuesday. The rebels fired on a 10-member police squad in the Sunabeda forests near the eastern state of Orissa on Monday. "We recovered nine bodies from the forests on Tuesday morning," Chhatisgarh police official Giridhari Nayak said by telephone. "Search operations are continuing as one police officer is still missing," he was quoted as saying by the German Press Agency "DPA".
