Ten suspected communist rebels were killed Friday in two separate clashes with government troops in the Philippines, the military said. According to dpa, eight suspects were killed in Rizal town in Nueva Ecija province, 135 kilometres north of Manila, in a firefight with policemen and soldiers at a checkpoint. Colonel Felicito Trinidad, an army brigade commander, said the guerrillas were intercepted after intelligence indicated they were heading to rob a sugar milling company of its payroll money. In Albay province, 330 kilometres south-east of Manila, two communist rebels were also killed in a clash with soldiers in Jovellar town, according to army Lieutenant Colonel Audrey Pasia. The soldiers were arriving to investigate complaints from a villager that guerillas were extorting money and valuables from local residents, when the clash broke out and two guerillas were killed.
