Akhir 27, 1432 H/April 1, 2011, SPA -- An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rattled the southern Mediterranean island of Crete on Friday, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported, dpa quoted the Athens Geodynamic Institute as saying. The epicentre was located in the sea some 360 kilometres south- east of Athens, between Crete and the Dodecannese island of Kassos, near the popular resort island of Rhodes. Residents on Crete reportedly rushed out of their homes in panic after the quake, which took place at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT) and was felt as far away as the Athens and the Egyptian capital of Cairo. Seismologists said the earthquake had a sea depth of 60 kilometers which explains why there were no injuries or serious damage.
