Akhir 21, 1432 H/March 26, 2011, SPA -- An airstrike by NATO-led forces in Afghanistan has killed an unspecific number of civilians in the southern province of Helmand, dpa quoted the alliance as saying Saturday. The incident occurred in the Naw Zad district, the military said in statement, without giving any figures. The airstrike hit two vehicles believed to be carrying Taliban insurgents on Friday, it said. "ISAF is launching a joint incident assessment team." Civilian casualties have been a major point of contention between the Afghan government and international forces, mainly from the US. Afghan Rights Monitor, a human rights organization in Kabul, said 512 Afghan civilians were killed by NATO and US soldiers in 2010.
