Akhir 19, 1432 H/March 24, 2011, SPA -- Taiwan and China are to cooperate on nuclear energy safety by letting their nuclear power stations act as "sister" plants, dpa cited the Central News Agency (CNA) as saying Thursday. The Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) operates the No 3 Nuclear Power Plant and will now cooperate with the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG). "The two sides have agreed to form sister plant relationship because CGNPG is close to Taiwan and it also uses pressurized water reactors," CNA quoted a Taipower official as saying. "A CGNPG delegation is scheduled to visit the Taipower in June to sign the sister plant relationship deal," he added. Cooperation between Taiwanese and Chinese nuclear power plants would include exchange of information on nuclear safety and exchange of visits. Taipower operates three nuclear power plants, with a combined six reactors, and is building a fourth plant. China has 13 nuclear reactors in operation and more than 25 under construction, according to the World Nuclear Association. On Wednesday, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou called on Taiwan and China to cooperate in ensuring the safety of the two sides' nuclear power plants following Japan's nuclear power plant blast, which was caused by the March 11 magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami.
