Akhir 1432 / 14 March 2011, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council held an urgent meeting on Monday morning to consider the weekend call by the Arab League for a no-fly zone over Libya. "So far there is no resolution on the table. Today's meeting will rather be an exploratory one, considering the outcomes of the summits by the Arab League, African Union and European Union," a council diplomat said according to dpa. On Saturday, the Arab League called on the U.N. Security Council to impose a no-fly zone on Libya depicting Gaddafi's government as illegitimate because of what it described as its crimes against the Libyan people. The African Union announced on Friday that the leaders of South Africa, Uganda, Mauritania, Congo and Mali would form a panel that will travel to Libya shortly. Meanwhile, the European Union has called on Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi to step down and has imposed tough sanctions on him and his inner circle.
