Akhir 04, 1432, March 09, 2011, SPA -- U.S. stocks finished higher Tuesday. In world markets, European stocks closed mostly flat, while Asian markets ended higher. The British index rose 0.1 percent, the German index rose 0.l percent, and the French index rose 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.1 percent, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong jumped 1.7 percent, and Japan's Nikkei rose 0.2 percent. The U.S. dollar rose versus the euro and the yen. Light sweet crude oil for April delivery fell 53 cents to $104.91 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures fell $7.30 to $1,427.20 an ounce. Shares of major oil drilling and refining names also fell, with Chesapeake Energy falling 2 percent, ConocoPhilips falling 1 percent, and Tesoro shares falling 4 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average surged 124.35, or 1.0 percent, to 12,214.38. Shares of Bank of American jumped 5 percent, American Express rose 3.5 percent, and J.P. Morgan Chase rose 2.7 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.69, or 0.9 percent, to 1,321.82. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 20.14, or 0.7 percent, to 2,765.77.
