Awwal 12, 1432 H/Feb 15, 2011, SPA -- Apple on Tuesday launched a new subscription service on its App store that for the first time will allow publishers of newspapers, magazines and music to charge monthly recurring fees for their products. The move has been long awaited in the publishing world, where it is hoped that the ability to offer subscriptions over popular devices, like the iPad and iPhone, will finally allow publishers to recoup some of the cash they lost when readers ditched print editions in favour of free content available on the web, according to dpa. Apple first introduced subscription payments earlier this month for the launch of The Daily, the much trumpeted iPad-only newspaper from News Corp. Under the terms of the deal Apple will keep 30 per cent of payments when the subscription is made directly through the App Store. But if a customer is directed to the App Store from the publisher's website, the publisher will keep the entire fee. Apple also insists that any subscription offer made online by publishers should also be made through the App Store.
