Twelve inmates escaped Monday from a jail in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, after several blasts outside distracted guards, according to dpa. State authorities said the escape from the Aquiles Serdan prison happened at 5 am (1200 GMT). One of the inmates was captured again, and police were searching for the others. Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesman for the state attorney general, told W Radio that following the blasts an SUV pulled down a portion of the fence outside the prison. Inmates had already made a hole with a diameter of 1.6 metres in the wall. The jail in Aquiles Serdan holds around 1,500 inmates. All personnel on duty at the time of the escape were being investigated, with police and soldiers temporarily stepping in to help with security.
