European Union plans to impose a ban on the landing of Icelandic mackerel in its ports to protest what it is sees as excessive catches by the northern seafaring nation. The European Commission on Friday informed Iceland of its intent and will now proceed to work out plans on how to enforce it, according to AP. The EU has long threatened to escalate a dispute with Iceland over the catches, and the problem might ultimately also affect Reykjavik's EU membership application. The EU maintains that Iceland fishes disproportionate amounts of mackerel in northern waters, not only threatening the livelihoods of EU fishermen around the North Sea but also the commercial survival of the stock. -- SPA
