One miner was killed and another nine were injured after two quakes struck a coal mine in southern Poland early Thursday, dpa reported. The 4.4-magnitude quakes struck the KGHM Polska Miedz SA mine in Polkowice-Sieroszowice, in the country's coal-rich Silesia region, some 1,000 metres below ground, the Polish Press Agency PAP reported. Mining work is believed to have been the impetus for the temblors. The nine injured miners were treated for slight injuries, while another three had managed to escape from the quake.
