Members of the UN Special Commission investigating Israel's lethal interception of a a flotilla of aid ships heading for Gaza began work on Monday in Turkey, dpa cited the Anadolu news agency as reporting. The four-member panel, appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon, is investigating the actions that led to the deaths of nine activists as Israeli naval commandos stormed one of the ships. British former judge Desmond de Silva, one of the members of the commission, met the Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu. The panel will be spending much of the week in Istanbul, Ankara and Iskenderun, meeting activists, witnesses and those injured in the Israeli mission. Israeli troops stormed the flotilla off the coast of the Gaza Strip on May 31, seized the ships carrying supplies destined for Gaza and hundreds of participants involved in the relief efforts. The ships and passengers were subsequently released. But eight Turkish nationals and one American Turk were killed.
