In the context of the restructuring of foreign policy and the policy of European Security and Defence and in accordance with the terms of the Lisbon Treaty for European unity,The European Union decided to appoint French diplomat Patrice Bergamini as the head the European Union's intelligence agency. Bergamini, 40, a specialist in defence and security matters, works in the cabinet of EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton, who named him to head the Joint Situation Centre JSC also known as SitCen. The agency is now part of the European External Action Service, the 27-nation bloc's diplomatic corps headed by Ashton which was formally launched on Monday.
