Thousands gathered today in Sarajevo to pay their respects to 775 victims of the Srebrenica massacre whose remains were recently identified, according to dpa. The remains will be buried in Srebrenica on Sunday, 15 years since the day Serb forces overran the Muslim enclave under the protection of UN peacekeepers. The Serbs, commanded by general Ratko Mladic, executed about 8,000 men and boys over a period of 10 days. Women, children and the infirm were expelled to Muslim territory. Some 10,000 people, including leading politicians from the Balkans region, are expected to attend Sunday's funeral in Srebrenica. The remains are being transported from Visoko, on the outskirts of the capital, to the Potocari memorial at Srebrenica. They will join the remains of 3,749 others previously identified. The remains of many more Srebrenica victims still need to be identified. These are mainly partial remains, as the bodies of massacre victims were buried and reburied to try and to hide the crime. A column of some 5,000 people are on a symbolic "march of peace" from Tuzla to Srebrenica, where they are due to arrive for the burial on Sunday.
