The United Nations welcomed today Haiti's decision to hold presidential and legislative elections in November, some 11 months after the country's worst humanitarian crisis, dpa reported. The Haitian government said this week elections will be organized on November 28. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on the government of President Rene Preval, the provisional electoral council, political parties and all Haitians to ensure that the elections will be "transparent and credible, and serve to reinforce Haiti's democratic institutions as the country strives to recover from the worst humanitarian crisis in its history." Ban reaffirmed the UN commitment to support Haiti in preparing for the elections. He said the UN mission in Haiti has already begun putting in place measures for security, logistical and technical assistance for the elections.
