The U.N. mission in Afghanistan has condemned the killing of one of its staff in Kabul on Monday and said it is assisting Afghan security forces with their investigation. Two Afghan staff members were in a U.N.-marked white jeep when it was fired on amid heavy traffic near the U.S. embassy in Kabul. The driver was killed while the other staff member escaped injury. “The circumstances of the shooting are not yet clear. United Nations security teams are working with Afghan security institutions to assist investigations,” a statement from the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said. “The United Nations condemns violence against any of its personnel under any circumstances. Those responsible for this killing should be brought to justice without delay,” the statement added. The United Nations has some 1,600 staff serving with UNAMA, whose mission is to assist the Afghan government with recovery and reconstruction and to coordinate aid efforts. The majority of the staff are Afghan nationals.
