France announced today it would pull all but 300 of its 1,200 troops out of former colony Senegal, host to one of three active French bases in Africa, according to Reuters. Those troops remaining would staff a military cooperation centre for the West African region, the French embassy said in a statement issued in the capital Dakar. France will retain other bases in the central African state of Gabon and in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, it noted.
