The United States backed Greece's request for a bail-out from the European Union and International Monetary Fund to help the Mediterranean country out of a massive debt crisis, dpa quoted White House spokesman Robert Gibbs as saying today. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou earlier in the day asked the EU and IMF to activate an aid package estimated at between 40 billion and 45 billion euros (52-58 billion dollars). "We support the call for that activation," Gibbs told reporters. The Treasury Department was monitoring the situation, he added.
