A volcano in Iceland continued to spew ash and smoke skywards Thursday evening with no sign of letup in the days ahead, officials said in Reykjavik according to dpa. According to the Foreign Ministry, experts said the risk of ongoing volcanic activity for the upcoming days was high, noting that the "the force of the volcanic eruption under the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier appears to be steady." International weather observatories, in cooperation with the Icelandic Met Office, were monitoring the weather conditions and the projected path of the volcanic ash cloud, the ministry said. The ash cloud has caused the closure of air space and airports in several countries in northern Europe. "We can only hope that the situation will calm down," Iceland Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir said on television. "But we can't do anything. The damage is already considerable," she added.
