Three people were killed and six injured after toxic gas leaked from a chemical plant in central China's Hunan Province on Friday, local authorities said on Saturday. By Saturday noon, the six people who were receiving treatment at hospital were in stable condition, Xinhua quoted the government of Yuhu District of Xiangtan City as saying in a statement. The accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. on Friday when Huaye Electrolytic Manganese Co. in Xiangtan was conducting an experiment on a new product, said the statement. Two people died on the scene and one died in the hospital after treatment failed. More than 1,000 people in and around the plant were evacuated. Police were still cordoning off the plant on Saturday, though local government said the air pollution had been alleviated. Meanwhile, environmental protection department of Xiangtan were still monitoring and evaluating the pollution.
