A convicted drug trafficker was hanged in public in south-western Iran, ISNA news agency reported Friday, according to dpa. ISNA said that the man was hanged on Wednesday in the city of Ahvaz after his initial death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court. Most executions in Iran take place inside prisons, but some are carried out in public to increase their effect as a deterrent. Murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking of quantities in excess of 5 kilograms are among the crimes punishable by death under Iranian law.
