A walrus, the large, flippered, marine mammal that lives in the Arctic region, has been sighted in western Denmark, dpa cited reports as saying today. The walrus apparently landed near the Nissum fjord on the west coast of Jutland - some 2,000 kilometres south of the Arctic circle. Initial reports suggested that the several-hundred-kilo heavy animal was not fully mature. But it was in poor condition and would likely have to be killed, the Danish Forest and Nature Agency told news agency Ritzau. The last time a living walrus was sighted in Denmark was 1999. Arctic walruses usually migrate twice a year and can be found in the Svalbard Archipelago off northern Norway, Greenland and Siberia suggesting that the animal sighted in Denmark was really off course.
