The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu received yesterday Ambassador James B Smith, who has recently been appointed as the US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Martin R Quinn, Consul General of the United States in Jeddah at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah. The Secretary General briefed the Ambassador on the current activities of the Organization. Their discussion touched on various political issues notably the situation in Afghanistan and Somalia. They also discussed the OIC-US cooperation under the framework of President Obama's Cairo Speech and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the OIC and the US in this regard, according to a press release of the OIC. The US Ambassador expressed his willingness in furthering the bilateral relations between the OIC and USA. The Secretary General thanked the Ambassador and expressed his desire to work closely with the Ambassador on issues of mutual concerns to the OIC and US. "Cooperation in the fields of fighting polio and implementation of joint OIC-US project to provide maternal and infant health services in the Least Developed OIC member states were given a special focus in the meeting."
