Polish and German parliament speakers unveiled a monument Friday in Krzyzowa, southern Poland, that paid tribute to Warsaw"s role in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, local media reported, according to dpa. Bronislaw Komorowski, speaker of the Polish parliament, participated in the ceremonies with his German counterpart, Norbert Lammert. Friday"s event was part of larger celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Europe. The monument in Krzyzowa includes a piece of the Berlin Wall and an informational plaque about a mass held in Krzyzowa in 1989 at which Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl were present. The mass became a "symbol of a breakthrough in Polish-German relations," the plaque says. The 20th anniversary celebrations also included the unveiling in June of a monument in front of the German parliament. That monument featured a piece of a wall from the Gdansk shipyard, famous as the site where Lech Walesa led strikes that helped topple Poland"s Communist regime.
