In October 2008, the joblessness rate was 5.8 percent and in September this year it was 7.3 percent, Statistics Finland said. Unemployment in Finland, which had been on a gradual 10-year decline, began an upward climb a year ago. It peaked at a 10.9 percent in May. In October 2003, it was 8.3 percent. The latest figures mean that last month 215,000 people were out of work in a population of 5.3 million _ up from 155,000 a year earlier, the agency said.
