A surveillance airplane assigned to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti crashed Friday near the border with the Dominican Republic with six to 10 military personnel on board, the United Nations said. U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said the Uruguayan airplane went down in rugged terrain west of Fond-Verrettes. Rescue teams have been sent to the region on foot because there are no roads. It was unknown whether there are any survivors. The 9,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force has been in Haiti since a 2004 rebellion ousted former President Jean-Betrand Aristide.
