The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on Monday reported a huge 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean, about 260 kilometers (160 miles) north of Port Blair in India's Andaman Islands. The earthquake was reported to be 33 kilometers below the surface. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a regional tsunami watch was in place for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The center said the earthquake has the potential to generate destructive tsunamis in the region along coasts within 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the epicenter, though it warned that it was unknown whether such tsunamis were created Monday. The earthquake was reported to have struck about 360 kilometers (225 miles) south-southwest of Myanmar, 820 kilometers (510 miles) west of Bangkok, and 2,285 kilometers (1,420 miles) southeast of New Delhi.
