Two British soldiers have been killed during operations in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday, according to Reuters. The soldiers were killed on Wednesday by an explosion near Lashkar Gah, a town in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan that is a focus of fighting with the Taliban. Thousands of U.S. and British forces have launched a large-scale operation across southern Afghanistan in the past 24 hours to try to drive the Taliban back and retake territory. The British deaths raise to at least 171 the number of British troops to have died since Britain joined the United States and other countries in invading Afghanistan in 2001.
