One person was killed on the Georgian border to the breakaway republic of Abkhazia in a landmine explosion near an European Union patrol on Sunday, according to dpa. An ambulance driver was killed in the blast, the EU mission (EUMM) in Tbilisi reported, while police reported that an accompanying EU mission doctor was injured. The leader of the mission, German diplomat Hansjoerg Hbaer, called on the parties to the conflict on both sides of the border to investigate the incident. Nearly a year after a five-day war between Russia and Georgia, the borders of the breakaway Georgia regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are still sites of shootings and explosions. More than 200 EU observers are present in the buffer zones between the parties in order to secure the peace.
