They said that while the virus has generally been mild in Britain, «a small minority of cases» are experiencing severe symptoms. Scottish health authorities announced 83 new cases of the virus on Friday. On Thursday, the World Health Organization declared a swine flu pandemic, the first global flu epidemic in 41 years.
