At least seven people, including two police officers and two suspected drug traffickers, died in a police raid in the slum neighborhood Complexo da Mare in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian media reported Friday. The militarized police raid started late Thursday, as officers sought weapons and drugs in the "favela," or slum. Police said the police clashed with alleged drug traffickers during the routine raid, prompted by a tip-off that there were "heavily-armed" criminals in the area. Police were attacked from within the slum, and the officers, circled "by some 50 criminals," requested reinforcements, DPA reported.
