President Barack Obama plans to speak to the American Medical Association (AMA) on Monday to press for his overhaul of the U.S. health-care system, the White House said Wednesday. Spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters that Obama will travel to Chicago to address the powerful association's annual meeting. He said the president will call the current state of the medical system unacceptable during his speech. Gibbs said Obama will describe why past efforts to change health-care systems failed and warn about what happens if the reforms do not happen this year. Obama has called health-care reform critical to the long-term success of the U.S. economy. On Thursday, the U.S. president will visit Green Bay, Wisconsin to speak with voters about his plan to overhaul the health-care system.
