An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit North Sulawesi about 101 kilometers northeast of Bitung sea, at 10:34 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) on Sunday, ANTARA reported. The quake's epicenter was located at 138 km northeast of Manado (North Sulawesi), 179 km northwest of Ternate (North Maluku), 217 km southeast of Tahuna or 261 km southwest of Melonguane (North Sulawesi), said information obtained from the National Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Office here on Sunday. According to the information, the quake occurred at 1.73 degrees northern latitude and 126.06 degrees eastern longitude, and at a depth of 43 km. The BMKG also informed that the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. Earlier, on Friday (May 29), an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale also hit neighboring Gorontalo province at 2.33 am Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The quake's epicenter was located at 0.21 degrees southern latitude, 122.80 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 23 km, around 88 km southwest of Gorontalo, 260 km southeast of Toli-toli (Southeast Sulawesi), and 294 km southwest of Manado.
