Turkey's military says its warplanes have attacked Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq following a land mine explosion that killed six soldiers, AP reported. A military statement says Air Force jets bombed targets in the Iraqi border region of Avasin-Basyan on Thursday. Turkish warplanes have on several occasions targeted rebel hideouts in northern Iraq from where guerrillas have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets for decades. The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984.
