Ten people were dead and over 300 in hospital in Tanzania Today, one day after an explosion at an armoury on the outskirts of the capital Dar es Salaam, dpa reported. The blast from exploding artillery shells, bullets and other ammunition, which took place on the Bagala army base, was felt throughout the whole of the coastal city, and set many nearby houses on fire. An investigation has begun into the cause of the blast, although officials believe it was accidental. The explosion caused panic and one of the dead was a child who jumped into a river and drowned, the BBC reports. Several hundred children are also waiting to be reunited with their parents after fleeing the explosion. Six of the dead were soldiers at the base. Police said the death toll may rise as searches were still to be conducted of burnt-out buildings. Dar es Salaam last suffered a major blast in 1998, when the US embassy was bombed.
