Georgian officials say Russian troops and separatists have attacked a Georgian police checkpoint near the breakaway province of Abkhazia, according to AP. Georgia's Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili says Abkhaz separatist fighters backed by two Russian armored personnel carriers fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons early Thursday. He said the checkpoint near the village of Ganmukhuri was damaged but nobody was hurt. Tensions remain high near the breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after an August war between Russia and Georgia. Georgian officials have accused Russian-backed separatists of launching frequent attacks since the war, denied by Russia and the separatists. There was no immediate comment from Moscow Thursday.
