U.S. President George W. Bush on Friday expressed confidence to French President Nicolas Sarkozy that a rescue package for the U.S. financial system would be reached, the White House said. The French leader called Bush to discuss the situation that has shaken Washington for the last week. White House Spokesman Gordon Johndroe said that the two leaders discussed the tense negotiation between the White House and the U.S. Congress on the passage of the $700 billion financial rescue package. “President Bush talked with President Sarkozy about the ongoing negotiations taking place on Capitol Hill and expressed confidence that we will get something done,” Johndroe said, adding that Sarkozy reiterated his support for Bush during the crisis. “The two leaders agreed that the world will need to engage in a dialogue to discuss how business is done in the 21st century, but that the immediate focus must be on securing congressional approval of a rescue plan,” Johndroe said. Sarkozy has called for a summit of global leaders to overhaul the world financial system in the wake of the financial crisis that has shaken markets.
