Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has described as a historic event the conclusion of treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Itar-Tass reported. “Our road to this event was not an easy one, and the peoples of both republics literally paid for them with so much suffering,” Medvedev said at the signing ceremony in the Kremlin. “The just-signed agreements are a logical consequence of the chain of events that have taken place in the region since the early 1990s,” Medvedev said. “And, of course, they build up from the efforts and actions Russia has taken since August 8, 2008. The purpose of our actions was to curb the Georgian aggressors, restore peace and stability to the Caucasus and create conditions for the free and democratic development of the Abkhazian and South Ossetian peoples.”
