Bahrain will begin introducing next year a BD13 million hi-tech project to monitor its growing road traffic, Gulf Daily News reported today. The Intelligent Transportation System project has been divided into three phases, assistant under-secretary for roads Essam Khalaf told Akhbar Al Khaleej, a sister publication of Gulf Daily News. The project includes a highly advanced traffic control centre, he said. CCTV cameras, latest speed and road monitoring equipment, electronic traffic signals and guidance panels are to be introduced in the first phase, which will cost BD5m. The project is being implemented in conjunction with a major upgrade of the country's roads network that includes several flyovers and plans to replace roundabouts with traffic signals.
