A strong earthquake occurred off Canada's western coast Thursday near Vancouver Island. The magnitude-6.1 earthquake's epicenter was 156 kilometers west of Port Hardy and 472 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Vancouver, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The earthquake happened at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake was the latest in a series of coastal seismic events since Monday. Two earthquakes occurred on Wednesday, both with magnitudes of about 5. There have been 18 earthquakes in the region this week. Seismologists said the earthquakes are happening in a “seismically active” region, and they are too far offshore to be felt on land and too small to generate tsunamis.
