Amazon.com gained 9.4 percent after an investment bank said the online retailer probably will sell twice as many Kindle electronic book readers this year than initially thought. The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 32.62 to 8,492.94. The American Stock Exchange composite index fell 12.00 to 2,061.35. And the Russell 2000 index rose 16.76 to 751.06.
