The University will be located in a secure environment featuring a well-planned and landscaped academic core and research laboratories, along with a seaside community and commercial center with a wide variety of shops and housing, from apartments to single-family homes. There will be parks, playgrounds, and schools for families with children; recreation amenities will include a golf course, yacht club, and marina.
The campus will overlook the sea, and many of the residences will have waterfront views.
The initial research clusters for KAUST were selected for their importance to the existing industries in the Kingdom; the development of future, knowledge-based industries; the Kingdom's social and economic needs; and the potential regional and international impact.
The first four Research Institutes, with exemplary topics for Research Centers or major research programs, will be:
-- Resources, Energy and Environment Interdisciplinary fundamental and problem-driven research and graduate education in energy sources, systems, and uses; environmental quality and improvement; and water and coastal zone resources. Water desalination ,Solar energy ,Clean combustion and Catalysis.
-- Biosciences and Bioengineering Fundamental and problem-driven research and graduate education in genomic and molecular biosciences important to regional and global agriculture, aquaculture, biodiversity, industrial bioprocesses, and human health. Arid and coastal region plant genomics, Marine molecular bioscience and Red Sea ecology.
-- Materials Science and Engineering Fundamental and problem-driven research and graduate education in materials including molecular engineering of application-specific materials and developments in nanotechnology to improve environmental quality and industrial processes, and contribute to human welfare. Composite materials and Membranes.
-- Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences Research and graduate education in applications of high-performance computing, new computer architectures, advanced computational techniques, and applied mathematics in areas of importance to Saudi Arabia, the region, and the global scientific and engineering research enterprise.Modeling and visualization, Computational earth sciences and Computational genomics.
