A fire broke out at Shuaiba Refinery after midnight Sunday killing one maintenance contractor and injuring another, according to Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) Monday, which said the flames are now under control. KNPC told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) refinery operations were not affected by the fire and are still at their daily 200,000 barrel per day capacity. The fire broke out 12:20 Sunday night during maintenance work at an isomax unit and there was only minor material damage at the unit's incinerator as a result of the fire, the company said. KNPC fire teams brought the flames under control fast enough to prevent the fire spreading, it said. KNPC said a committee is to be formed to investigate the incident and submit recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future, within the framework of the safety procedures set for Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and subsidiary bodies.
