A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Ternate, North Maluku at 1.24 am Thursday morning Western Indonesian Time (WIB), ANTARA reported. The quake's epicenter was located at 3.56 degrees northern latitude and 127.71 degrees eastern longitude, around 311 km northeast of Ternate, at a depth of 100 km below sea level. Indonesia lies in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
