Several Palestinian-Americans gathered outside the United Nations (U.N.) on Friday, despite wet weather, to protest the 60th anniversary of Israel's statehood and to educate the American public on Palestinians' displacement since its 1948 establishment. Palestinian-Americans at the demonstration told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) they see the anniversary of the establishment of Israel as “the Nakba” or catastrophe for displaced Palestinians around the world. Mary Loo from 'the Palestinian Right to Return Coalition' told SPA her main objective is “talking to the public that dares to come out in the rain and spreading the word that all of Palestine is occupied.” “We would like the American people to know the truth, to hear us, " Loo said. “Palestinian refugees and internally displaced Palestinians constitute the largest refugee population in the world, " according to Yasmin Hamidi from the Network of Arab-American Professionals of New York. There are 6.8 million displaced and in refugee status, she said. Rabbi Dovid Feldman from Jews United against Zionism told SPA, “this is not only a Nakba for the Palestinian people; this is a tragedy for Jewish people as well.” “On top of this all, they are repressing other people, fighting other people, creating animosity, creating hate, and destroyed the nice, peaceful coexistence between the Jewish people and the Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere, " he added. --MORE
